Microsoft Word Not Opening: This article describes the Microsoft Word not opening. Microsoft Word is a graphical word processing platform and it can allow the purpose of all users to type and save the document. It is helpful to all the operating system versions i.e to save the file by the users. Sometimes Microsoft Word not opening due to some cause of setup issues and files association.

Microsoft Word is a part of Office suite of products from Microsoft. Word is available in Multiple platforms in addition to Windows and Mobile versions of Windows 10, Android, Ios are also available. Some file formats are applicable to the word they are like that file extension and binary formats, XML document etc., Microsoft word’s native file format is denoted by .doc or  .docx. Microsoft Word has some features and flaws like those templates, word arts, macros, etc.,

Symptoms of Microsoft Word Not Opening:

  • The file icon is blank or displays an incorrect image
  • The file does not open

Causes of Microsoft Word Not Opening :

  • Third-party add-ins and plugins are troublemakers for Microsoft Word.
  • Viruses and Malware infect can cause one of the word application to malfunction.
  • A necessary file may be deleted or a file used by the office application was corrupted during the program crash.
  • some time computer hardware may be a fault.
  • The problem occurs when the association between the file and the corresponding application is missing.

How to Fix the Microsoft Word Not Opening :

1. Insert Your Document into Another File 

  • Open the first  document
  • Place the cursor where you want the second document to be inserted
  • From the Insert tab, Text group click on the down arrow next to the object and choose text from the file.
  • Select the file to be inserted.
  • Click on insert.
  • Use the save as command to save the combined document under a different name if you need to retain your original document.

2. Start Microsoft Word by Using A Switch

  • Open the start menu and search for run window
  • Then types run in the search box and press it
  • Open the run window then type the winword.exe in the command box and press it ok button.
  • Finally, open the word file.
  • The Winword.exe file is located in the following folder by default

c:/program files/Microsoft office/office

For example, if you want to start Word and preventing the add-ins and global templates, type the following the in the open box in the quotation marks

“c:/program files/Microsoft office/office/winword.exe”/a

3. Delete the Word Data Registry Sub Key

  • Close the all office programs
  • Open the start menu and type the run window
  • Open the run window and type the Regedit in the command box and click enter.
  • Locate the following registry subkey, as appropriate for the version of the word

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version\Word\Data

  • Click Data, and then click Export on the File menu
  • Name the file wddata.reg, and save the file to the  desktop
  • On the Edit menu, click delete and then click yes.
  • Exit registry editor.
  • Start word.

4. Restore the Original Word Data Registry Sub Key

  • Exit all Office programs
  • Double click on the wddata.reg icon on the desktop
  • Click, yes, and then click ok.

5. Delete the Word Options Registry Key

  • Open the Microsoft office word and click on the office icon.
  • Open the word options. Then open the new window.
  • Then open the new window and click on Advanced from the left menu
  • Find the display section, here you can see show the number of recent documents option
  • Set the counter to zero and press ok button.
  • Now you can see the recent document list is empty.

6. Restore the Original Word Options With Registry Key

  • Open the Microsoft office word and click on the office icon.
  • Open the word options. Then open the new window.
  • Then open the new window and click on Advanced from the left menu
  • Find the display section, here you can see show the number of recent documents option
  • Set the counter to the particular value and press ok button.
  • Now you can restore the options registry subkey.

7. Replace the Normal.dot Global Template File

  • Exit all Office programs
  • open the start menu and search for the run window
  • Then type Run in the search box and then opened.
  • Then type cmd in the command box and press Enter.
  • At the command prompt type, the following commands and press Enter.

ren%userprofile%/Appdata/Roaming/Microsoft/Templates/Normal.dotmold normal.dotm

Go to C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates.

  • Make any change that you want fonts, margins, spacing, and other settings. you can use the same commands and features that you use to change the document. but remember that you any changes that you make a normal.dotm will be applied to the documents in the future.
  • At that command prompt type exit  and press Enter
  • When you have finished then it can save the file.
  • Then start the word

8. Restore the Original Global Template File

  • Exit all Office programs
  • open the start menu and search for the run window
  • Then type Run in the search box and then opened.
  • Then type cmd in the command box and press Enter.

  • At the command prompt type, the following commands and press Enter.

ren%userprofile%/Appdata/Roaming/Microsoft/Templates/old normal.dot Normal.dot

  • Then start word

9. Disable the Startup Folder Add-ins

  • open the start menu and search regedit in the search box and press Enter.
  • Then open a popup window and click yes.
  • In the registry editor dialog box, you need to open the word add-ins folder.

HKEY_current_user/software/Microsoft/office/word/add-ins

  • Then expand the add-ins folder, and select the loader folder with the name of the add-in you need to disable word startup.
  • Go to the right pane of registry editor dialog box, you can see there is REG_DWORD file named Load Behaviour, please right-click on it and select Modify from the context menu.
  • Then the Edit DWORD dialog box popup, please replace the number in the value data box with zero and then click the ok button.
  • close the registry dialog box.
  • When starting up your Microsoft word, the specified add-in is disabled without displaying on the ribbon.

10. Delete the Com Add-ins

  • Exit all Office programs
  • Open the start menu and search regedit in the search box and press Enter.
  • Locate the following registry key
  • HKEY_current_user/software/Microsoft/office/word/add-ins
  • Click add-ins and click export on the file menu.
  • Create a name to the file and save the file on the desktop
  • On the edit, menu clicks delete and click yes.
  • Exit registry editor and start Word.

11. Change the Default Printer

  • Exit all Office programs
  • Open the start menu and search regedit in the search box and press Enter.
  • Right click on Microsoft xp[s document writer and then click set as default printer.
  • Start the Microsoft word.
