How to Resolve the Excel not Responding in Windows 10/11

  • The problem occurs when the association between the file and corresponding application is missing.

How to Solve the Excel not Responding:

1. Insert Your Document Into Another File:

  • Open the first document
  • Place the cursor where you want the second document to be inserted
  • From the Insert tab, Text group click on the down arrow next to the object and choose text from the file.
  • Select the file to be inserted.
  • Click on insert.
  • Use the save as command to save the combined document under a different name if you need to retain your original document.

2. Start Excel by Using a Switch:

  • Open the start menu and search for run window
  • Then type run in search box and press it
  • Open the run window then type the winword.exe in the command box and press it ok button.
  • Finally, open the excel file.
  • The Winword.exe file is located in the following folder by default

c:/program files/Microsoft office/office/excel

For example, if you want to start to excel and preventing the add-ins and global templates, type the following  in the open box in the quotation marks

“c:/program files/Microsoft office/office/winword.exe”/a

3. Delete the Excel Data Registry Subkey

  • Close the all office programs
  • open the start menu and type the run window
  • open the run window and type the Regedit in the command box and click enter.
  • locate the following registry subkey, as appropriate for the version of the excel

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version\Word\Data

  • Click Data, and then click Export on the File menu
  • Name the file wddata.reg, and save the file to the desktop
  • On the Edit menu, click delete and then click yes.
  • Exit registry editor.
  • start excel.

4. Restore the Original Excel Data Registry Subkey:

  • Exit all Office programs
  • Double click on the wddata.reg icon on the desktop
  • Click, yes, and then click ok.

5. Delete the Excel Options Registry Key

  • Open the Microsoft Excel and click on the office icon.
  • Open the word options.Then open the new window.
  • Then open the new window and click on Advanced from the left menu
  • FInd the display section, here you can see show the number of recent documents option
  • Set the counter to zero and press ok button.
  • Now you can see the recent document list is empty.

6. Restore the Original Excel Options With Registry Key

  • Open the Microsoft excel and click on the office icon.
  • Open the word options.Then open the new window.
  • Then open the new window and click on Advanced from the left menu
  • FInd the display section, here you can see show the number of recent documents option
  • Set the counter to the particular value and press ok button.
  • Now you can restore the options registry subkey.

7. Replace the Normal .dot Global Template File

  • Exit all Office programs
  • open the start menu and search for the run window
  • Then type Run in the search box and then opened.
  • Then type cmd in the command box and press Enter.
  • At the command prompt type, the following commands and press Enter.

ren%userprofile%/Appdata/Roaming/Microsoft/Templates/Normal.dotmold normal.dotm

Go to C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates.

  • Make any change that you want fonts, margins, spacing, and other settings.you can use the same commands and features that you use to change the document. but remember that you any changes that you make a normal.dotm will be applied to the documents in the future.
  • At that command prompt type exit and press Enter
  • When you have finished then it can save the file.
  • Then start the excel.

8. Restore the Original Global Template File

  • Exit all Office programs
  • open the start menu and search for the run window
  • Then type Run in the search box and then opened.
  • Then type cmd in the command box and press Enter.
  • At the command prompt type, the following commands and press Enter.

ren%userprofile%/Appdata/Roaming/Microsoft/Templates/old normal.dot Normal.dot

  • Then start Excel

9. Disable the Startup Folder Add-Ins

  • open the start menu and search regedit in the search box and press Enter.
  • Then open a popup window and click yes.
  • In the registry editor dialog box, you need to open the excel add-ins folder.

HKEY_current_user/software/Microsoft/office/excel/add-ins

  • Then expand the add-ins folder, and select the loader folder with the name of the add-in you need to disable Excel startup.
  • Go to the right pane of registry editor dialog box, you can see there is REG_DWORD file named Load Behaviour, please right click on it and select Modify from the context menu.
  • Then the Edit DWORD dialog box popup, please replace the number in the value data box with zero and then click the OK button.
  • close the registry dialog box.
  • When starting up your Microsoft Excel, the specified add-in is disabled without displaying on the ribbon.

10. Delete the Com Add-Ins

  • Exit all Office programs
  • open the start menu and search regedit in the search box and press Enter.
  • Locate the following registry key
  • HKEY_current_user/software/Microsoft/office/Excel/add-ins
  • Click add-ins and click export on the file menu.
  • create a name to the file and save the file on the desktop
  • on the edit, menu clicks delete and click yes.
  • Exit registry editor and start Word.

11. Change the Default Printer

  • Exit all Office programs
  • open the start menu and search regedit in the search box and press Enter.
  • Right click on Microsoft xps document writer and then click set as default printer.
  • Start the Excel.
